Scientists have discovered rather intriguing and evocative sets of ancient human and giant sloth footprints in New Mexico. The prints date back some 10,000 to 15,000 years and are stacked with a human one being inside and on top of the ones left by a now extinct ground sloth. Notably, the sloths of that time and place weighed around 8,000 pounds. The team tracked and examined the sets they found and came up with a scenario about their making. The researchers posit that the humans were chasing and perhaps even attempting to hunt the sloth. Either way, the massive sloth appears to have put an end to the activity by standing on its hind legs and using its formidable stature to frighten the humans following it.
1. What did the scientists find?
2. How heavy were the ground sloths around 10,000 years ago?
3. Based on the evidence, what were the sloth and humans doing?
4. With the same evidence, do you think you could come up with a different scenario?
"Whatever you do today, it will become an intriguing research object for future scientists."
